Site & Building Analysis

The site for this project is located in Goergetown, Penang. The building itself is about 36m by 26m. It is a heritage building that has been perserved since the British presence on the island. The old buiding incorporates the Art Deco architectural style, that are seen from the past. Verticality and repetition of line are the significant features that can be observed from the building facade.

Neighbourhood Context & Building Elements

 

The Art Deco building is located opposite Continential Hotel and near to Komtar in Central Penang. It is surrounded with schools, hotel, shopping mall, mechanical shops and food stalls.

 

The building is divided into two parts. The front facade of the building consist of the two main vertical Art Deco element, framed windows and air ventilation. Additionally, it consists total of 14 columns and 7 beams.The interior space are natural ventilated through the existence of air ventilation holes at the both front and back walls. Both parts have the existing roof truss. The back structure are supported by 8 steel i-beams and 4 roof truss, without any solid walls.

Potential & Limitation

 

Potential

  • Convenient access through the main road and side road.

  • Has significant Art Deco architecture style.

  • Natural air through the ventilation of the building.

 

Limitation

  • The location of the site is located near to construction site and surrounded by mechanical shops

  • Limited space for car park

  • The humidity level of the site are very high as it is facing the west.
